How to apply transparent paint to achieve Spectraflame look
Bring a deep, shiny finish to your custom builds — just like the Hot Wheels Super Treasure Hunts or RLCs.
Getting Started
Before anything else, you’ll need to disassemble the model. That means boring out the top of the rivets underneath to separate the body from the base. A small drill or rotary tool works best — this is really easy to do with a regular cordless drill. Usually using the #3 first, then the #4 drill bit. Once it's apart, you're ready to strip and prep the casting. Apply paint stripper and carefully wash it off after the suggested time period has passed. Make sure no residue from the paint stripper is left on the car, as well as any leftover paint in the grooves.
Achieving the Super Treasure Hunt look can be done with just a good polish. But if you're aiming for a flawless, RLC-level finish, you'll want to go a step further — removing surface defects by using a rotary tool or manually sanding with progressively finer grits.
What You’ll Need
- A stripped diecast casting (no original paint left)
- Autosol Metal Polish or any quality metal polish (Spectraflame) / Sanding with progressively finer grits, then polishing (RLC)
- Soft microfiber cloths
- A hairdryer or warm surface (optional but helps)
- An airbrush
How to Apply
- Strip off the factory paint completely — you need bare metal for the effect to work.
- Polish the casting using Autosol Metal Polish or similar, a few times if needed. For perfect clarity without defects (RLC), you'll need to sand the casting, then polish it.
- Wipe it clean — make sure there’s no polish or residue left behind. A quick wipe with isopropyl alcohol helps.
- Warm the casting before spraying (just lightly). This helps the paint go on smoother and stick better.
- Spray in light, even coats using your airbrush. Let each coat dry before adding the next.
- Layer up until it looks right. The more coats, the deeper the color.
Available in a growing range of colors, it’s a simple upgrade that completely transforms the look of your car. Whether you're a collector or customizer, this is the paint that gives your build that deep reflecting, premium finish.
